A permanent interactive installation within Volkswagen's Autostadt campus in Wolfsburg — an immersive data environment where sculpted metallic surfaces, projected visualizations, and interactive touchscreens transform corporate information into spatial experience, giving visitors direct access to Volkswagen's global operations, investor relations, and vehicle data through a continuous landscape of custom furniture and digital media.
Corporate Information as Spatial Experience
Knowledge-Gate was commissioned by Volkswagen as a permanent installation within the Autostadt, the automaker’s visitor campus adjacent to its main factory in Wolfsburg. Rather than a conventional exhibition or corporate lobby, the brief called for an environment in which the full breadth of Volkswagen’s global operations — financial performance, worldwide manufacturing, vehicle development, investor relations — could be communicated directly to visitors through immersive, interactive spatial means. The installation transforms what would typically be static corporate data into a navigable environment, making the abstract tangible and the numerical experiential.
Sculptural Interior Landscape
The interior is organized as a continuous landscape of custom-fabricated metallic surfaces that flow from floor to wall to ceiling without conventional joints or transitions. Angular planes in brushed aluminum and anodized blue fold upward to form console desks, cantilevered canopies, and display housings, creating a spatial language that reads simultaneously as architecture, furniture, and media infrastructure. Accent surfaces in warm gold and deep red textile provide tonal counterpoints to the predominantly cool metallic palette. The polished resin floor reflects the overhead geometry, doubling the visual complexity of the space and dissolving the boundary between the physical installation and its mirror image.
Interactive Terminals and Data Walls
Along one wall, a series of recessed interactive terminals — each housed within a sculpted dark bezel — invite visitors to navigate Volkswagen’s operations through touch. The terminals’ organic, almost automotive bezels suggest dashboard instruments scaled to architectural proportion, blurring the distinction between vehicle interior and building interior. Opposite, large-format projected screens display navigable world maps, financial data, and corporate narratives, their imagery updated in real time. A central LED ticker column threads vertically through the space, streaming financial and operational data in red text — a kinetic spine that gives the installation a persistent sense of live information flow.
Touch Tables and Consoles
Freestanding interactive consoles rise from the floor as extensions of the sculptural surface, their illuminated touch surfaces embedded flush within continuous metallic forms. These stations allow visitors to explore vehicle specifications, manufacturing processes, and design development at their own pace. The furniture is not placed within the architecture but generated from it — each console, table, and display housing emerges from the same formal vocabulary of folded planes and radiused edges, so that the entire installation reads as a single, integrated object rather than an assembly of separate components.
Light and Atmosphere
Blue ambient light washes the metallic surfaces from concealed sources, reinforcing the installation’s technological character and giving the space a deep, immersive tonality. Linear light slots cut into the red accent wall emit a warm glow that balances the cool blue palette. Overhead projectors are integrated into the angular canopy elements, their housings designed as part of the architectural language rather than exposed as equipment. The resulting atmosphere is closer to an inhabitable data visualization than a conventional exhibition — visitors move through information rather than past it, surrounded by surfaces that are simultaneously structural, reflective, and communicative.
Collaboration
Knowledge-Gate was developed in collaboration with YES Architecture, who served as the local architectural partner in Wolfsburg, facilitating the project’s realization within the Autostadt campus. The installation represents a synthesis of Asymptote’s long-standing interest in the spatial potential of digital information — from the New York Stock Exchange virtual trading floor to the Guggenheim Virtual Museum — applied here to the specific challenge of making a global corporation’s data accessible, legible, and experiential within a single, continuous interior environment.
