A serene civic landscape in Schiedam where architecture, nature, and ceremony are integrated into a unified spatial experience — a crematorium and auditorium establishing a dignified environment for remembrance and reflection within its surrounding park landscape.
Located along the waterfront in Schiedam, the Beukenhof project addresses one of architecture’s most sensitive programs — the design of spaces for mourning, ceremony, and collective memory. The building’s horizontal forms and restrained materiality respond to this charge, carefully embedding the complex within its surrounding park landscape so that the threshold between built environment and natural setting dissolves gradually as visitors move through the sequence of interior spaces.
Spatial Sequence
The architecture is organized as a sequence of calm, light-filled spaces that guide visitors through moments of gathering, ceremony, and contemplation. Public arrival areas transition into intimate ceremonial halls and memorial spaces, creating a carefully choreographed spatial progression that supports the emotional experience of mourning and remembrance.
Material & Light
Material restraint, natural light, and landscape integration define the architectural language. The building’s horizontal forms and quiet geometry reinforce a sense of stillness, while views toward gardens and water elements connect the interior spaces to the surrounding natural environment.
Civic Place
The project transforms the traditional crematorium program into a contemplative civic place where architecture and landscape work together to create an atmosphere of dignity, reflection, and collective memory.
