Dubai, United Arab Emirates 2018 Expo 2020 Dubai / UAE Authorities Pavilion and exhibition complex Competition Entry

A visionary pavilion proposal for Expo 2020 Dubai conceived as an architectural symbol of the UAE's forward-looking cultural and technological identity — a layered structure of interlocking volumes and shaded canopies inspired by desert flora.

Developed for an invited competition in 2015, the pavilion proposal responded to Dubai’s ambition to host an Expo that would position the UAE as a hub of innovation and cross-cultural exchange. The design takes the image of a blooming desert flower as its generative concept, translating the geometry and resilience of native flora into a dynamic architectural form.

Architecture & Form

The design draws inspiration from the geometry and resilience of desert flora, translating the image of a blooming desert flower into a dynamic architectural form. The pavilion unfolds as a layered structure of interlocking volumes and shaded canopies that create a sequence of public spaces, exhibition environments, and immersive media installations.

Public Forum & Experience

Organized around a central public forum, the architecture establishes a fluid relationship between exterior gathering spaces and interior exhibition halls. Visitors move through a sequence of shaded plazas, galleries, and elevated terraces that frame views across the Expo grounds while creating moments of discovery and reflection.

Environment & Climate

The pavilion integrates environmental strategies suited to the desert climate, including layered shading systems, passive cooling strategies, and integrated landscape elements that temper the public realm. As both a national showcase and a civic gathering place, the project embodies the Expo’s ambition to connect cultures, technologies, and ideas through architecture.
