New York, USA 2015 Robert Rauschenberg Foundation Cultural center, archive, offices, and exhibition spaces Commissioned

A cultural center in Lower Manhattan reimagining a historic urban building as a dynamic platform for contemporary art, cultural exchange, and archival research — integrating gallery spaces, archival facilities, and public programs within the dense urban context of the Financial District.

Located on Pine Street in the Financial District, the project adapts an existing building in Lower Manhattan to serve as the permanent home of the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation — consolidating gallery spaces, archival storage, administrative offices, and public programming under one roof for the first time. The design negotiates between preservation of the building’s historic character and the introduction of contemporary interventions suited to the foundation’s evolving cultural mission.

Program & Flexibility

The architecture integrates gallery spaces, archival facilities, foundation offices, and public programs within a flexible spatial framework designed to support exhibitions, lectures, and cultural events. Interior environments are organized to allow fluid transitions between public and institutional functions, creating a vibrant cultural destination within the dense urban context of Lower Manhattan.

Material & Light

Material clarity and carefully calibrated lighting define the interior experience, allowing artworks and exhibitions to remain the central focus of the spaces. The design balances the preservation of the building’s historic character with contemporary interventions that support the foundation’s evolving cultural mission.

Institutional Vision

The project positions the Rauschenberg Foundation headquarters as both a working institutional center and an accessible cultural venue, contributing to the continuing transformation of Lower Manhattan into a vibrant arts and cultural district.
