Sejong Center for Performing Arts

Sejong City, South Korea

Sejong, South Korea 2007 Sejong Metropolitan Government Performing arts complex Competition Entry

A major cultural landmark within the emerging civic center of Sejong City — a contemporary performing arts complex of concert halls, theaters, and rehearsal facilities designed to support music, theater, and cultural events while reinforcing the new capital's identity as a center for culture and public life.

As South Korea’s newly designated administrative capital, Sejong City required cultural infrastructure commensurate with its civic ambitions. The performing arts center was developed as part of the city’s founding cultural program, providing an anchor institution around which the broader civic district could take shape.

Performance Venues

The architecture is organized around a series of performance venues including a primary concert hall, secondary theaters, rehearsal studios, and public gathering spaces. A central public foyer and interior circulation network link these venues, creating an active cultural environment that supports both formal performances and informal public engagement.

Civic Form & Landscape

The building’s sculptural architectural form establishes a strong civic presence within the urban landscape of Sejong City while maintaining visual and spatial connections to surrounding public plazas and green spaces. Transparent public areas and expansive glazing allow the life of the city to flow into the building, reinforcing the performing arts center as an accessible cultural destination.

Cultural Catalyst

The project positions the Sejong Center as both a major performing arts venue and an urban catalyst, contributing to the development of Sejong City as a vibrant cultural and civic capital.
