A contemporary cultural destination in Budapest's Városliget dedicated to celebrating Hungary's musical heritage — integrating exhibition spaces, performance venues, and public cultural programs within a transparent architectural form that connects to the surrounding City Park landscape.
Budapest’s Városliget (City Park) — one of the oldest public parks in Europe and home to several of the city’s most important cultural institutions — became the site of a major revitalization initiative in the 2010s aimed at strengthening its role as the capital’s cultural heart. Asymptote’s competition entry responds with a building that sits lightly within the park landscape, integrating exhibition spaces, performance venues, and public cultural programs within a unified architectural environment.
Spatial Organization
The design organizes the building as a sequence of fluid spaces connecting exhibition galleries, performance halls, and educational facilities. A central public forum forms the heart of the project, functioning as a gathering place where visitors engage with music through concerts, multimedia installations, and interactive exhibitions.
Form & Landscape
The architectural form emphasizes openness and transparency, allowing the surrounding park landscape to extend visually and spatially through the building. Carefully calibrated glazing and structural elements create a light-filled interior environment that reinforces the connection between music, culture, and the natural setting of the park.
Cultural Landmark
As both museum and performance venue, the House of Hungarian Music was envisioned as a cultural landmark that strengthens Budapest’s identity as a center for artistic innovation while providing a new civic space for music, learning, and public engagement.
