A performing arts center at the World Trade Center site in Lower Manhattan, featuring a distinctive curved metallic form that houses flexible theater spaces within a dramatic civic landmark.
The reconstruction of the World Trade Center site in Lower Manhattan included provisions for a dedicated performing arts venue — a cultural counterpoint to the commercial towers rising around the memorial. This competition entry addresses the challenge of asserting an intimate, civic-scaled building within a precinct dominated by supertall glass facades. The design’s sweeping curved metallic envelope signals the cultural program within while engaging pedestrians with generous transparent openings at the ground floor.
Theater-in-the-Round
The interior is organized around a central theater-in-the-round auditorium, featuring a rotating circular stage surrounded by tiered seating. This flexible configuration allows for a wide range of performance types, from intimate chamber music to full theatrical productions. The technical infrastructure, including overhead rigging and lighting grids, is integrated within the cylindrical volume of the hall, maintaining clean sightlines while providing full production capability.
Lobby & Public Spaces
A grand double-height lobby serves as the primary public gathering space, defined by a sweeping sculptural staircase that connects the entry level to upper galleries and balconies. Warm material accents and carefully calibrated lighting contrast with the cool metallic and stone surfaces, creating an atmosphere that transitions from the energy of the city outside to the focused intimacy of the performance halls within. Curved paneled corridors and foyer spaces further reinforce the building’s formal language of continuous flowing surfaces.
