Carob Warehouse Contemporary Art Center
A Contemporary Beacon on the Mediterranean
A major new civic and cultural project along the Limassol waterfront -- sculptural wave-like forms reimagining a former industrial coastline as a vibrant destination for art, performance, and community.
Commissioned by the PSI Foundation, the project takes its name from the historic carob warehouses that once lined the Limassol waterfront — structures tied to the island’s agricultural trade that have largely disappeared as the coastline has been redeveloped. The center transforms this post-industrial shoreline into a vibrant destination for visual art, performance, education, and community gathering, anchoring a broader effort to reclaim the waterfront as civic space.
Architecture
Set within a dramatic natural and urban landscape, the design takes inspiration from the coastal topography and the kinetic rhythms of Mediterranean life. A series of sculptural, wave-like roof forms defines the project’s architecture — a sweeping, frozen motion that gives the building both symbolic resonance and formal presence.
Program
Beneath these undulating volumes are housed expansive exhibition galleries, a black box theater, media and events halls, and flexible educational spaces. The architecture is conceived as both a container for culture and a dynamic public interface, connecting the building seamlessly to a new waterfront landscape.
Vision
At night, the Carob Arts Center glows from within, becoming a cultural beacon on the shoreline. Strategically designed lighting and landscaping extend the project’s civic presence into the public realm, ensuring a continuous dialogue between architecture, art, and the surrounding city. This project exemplifies Asymptote’s belief in cultural architecture as a catalyst for urban renewal, civic identity, and artistic expression — rooted in place, but globally resonant.
