A bold, diagrid-wrapped fitness and wellness complex in Miami that merges high-performance structural expression with resort-style amenities including rooftop pools, landscaped promenades, and soaring glazed training halls.
The Vogel Fitness Complex reimagines the large-scale commercial gym as a piece of expressive civic architecture for Miami. Designed by Asymptote Architecture, the building is defined by a dramatic diagrid exoskeleton of angled white steel members that wraps the entire volume, functioning simultaneously as primary structure, solar shading device, and sculptural identity. The lattice creates a rhythmic pattern of diamond-shaped bays filled with operable glazed panels, allowing the interior spaces to open to natural ventilation while framing constantly shifting views of the surrounding tropical landscape and city skyline.
Interior Program
Inside, the complex is organized around soaring double-height fitness halls flooded with natural light through the full-height structural curtain wall. Equipment floors, group training studios, and a wellness zone are layered across multiple levels, connected visually by voids and perforated metal screen partitions that maintain spatial continuity while providing acoustic separation. Material choices reinforce the duality of performance and luxury: polished concrete and warm hardwood flooring in the training areas give way to marble surfaces and curated pop-art installations in the reception lobby and juice bar.
Outdoor Amenities
The building’s program extends beyond the enclosed volume to embrace Miami’s outdoor lifestyle. A rooftop amenity deck features an infinity-edge pool, lounge terraces, and tropical plantings set beneath a lightweight diagrid canopy that echoes the main facade, all oriented to capture panoramic views of the downtown skyline at sunset. At ground level, a landscaped pedestrian promenade lined with retail and cafe frontages threads between the complex’s volumes, creating an activated public realm that invites the surrounding neighborhood into the project.
