Approach the Future: The Asymptote Experience
NAI — Netherlands Architecture Institute, Rotterdam
Approach the Future: The Asymptote Experience was Asymptote's first major retrospective, held at the Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAI) in Rotterdam from September 2003 to January 2004. The exhibition presented models, photographs, drawings, projections, and site-specific installations designed by Hani Rashid and Lise Anne Couture.
Running from September 27, 2003 through January 18, 2004, this world premiere at the Netherlands Architecture Institute presented the most comprehensive survey of Rashid and Couture’s work to date — never before had so many projects by the practice been exhibited together in a single venue.
The exhibition showcased models, photographs, drawings, projections, and site-specific installations spanning the breadth of Asymptote’s practice. Among its highlights were the Flux 3.0 installation originally created for Documenta XI in Kassel, the Knoll A3 futuristic working environment, the Writing Space, the virtual environment for the New York Stock Exchange, and the Virtual Guggenheim Museum.
The installation architecture itself was designed by Asymptote as a single clarifying gesture — an undulating grid structure that descended from the ceiling into Gallery 1, creating caves and alcoves that framed the display of maquettes, digital projections, and audio-visual presentations. Rather than a conventional retrospective, the exhibition transformed the NAI galleries into an immersive spatial experience consistent with Asymptote’s broader investigations into the relationship between physical and virtual architecture.
