Busan, South Korea 2010 City of Busan Opera house and performing arts complex Competition Entry

A major cultural landmark on Busan's waterfront — a sculptural performing arts venue integrating opera house, concert hall, and civic public space within a dynamic architectural composition that contributes to the transformation of the city's harbor district.

Submitted for Busan’s expanding harbor district, the competition entry responds to the city’s ambition to establish an international performing arts destination along its waterfront. The design positions the opera house as both a working venue for music, theater, and dance and a generator of public life at the water’s edge.

Performance & Program

The architecture is organized around a central performance hall surrounded by rehearsal studios, secondary performance venues, and public gathering spaces. A sculptural exterior form defines the building’s iconic identity while framing views of the surrounding harbor and city skyline.

Public Circulation

Public circulation routes weave through the building as a series of interior promenades and terraces, allowing visitors to experience the architecture as a continuous cultural landscape. The design emphasizes openness and accessibility, extending the public realm through the building and reinforcing the opera house as a civic gathering place.

Urban Catalyst

Positioned at the intersection of culture and urban regeneration, the Busan Opera House contributes to the transformation of Busan’s waterfront into a vibrant cultural district while establishing a new international destination for performing arts.
