Kaohsiung Seaport Terminal

Kaohsiung, Taiwan

Kaohsiung, Taiwan 2014 Competition Entry

A contemporary maritime gateway designed to transform Kaohsiung's harbor edge into an active urban waterfront destination and international port of arrival.

Kaohsiung, Taiwan’s largest port city and a critical hub in the Asia-Pacific cruise network, has been systematically reclaiming its industrial harbor edge as public urban territory. Asymptote’s competition entry responds to this trajectory by integrating cruise terminal infrastructure with public programs, commercial activity, and civic spaces. The terminal volume is elevated above a new public plaza, creating a dynamic urban space designed for continuous public use and waterfront activation, drawing the energy of the surrounding district directly into the architecture.

Architecture & Light

Flanking towers housing port authority offices frame the terminal structure, while a sculptural roof system punctuated by geometric skylights introduces natural light into the building’s expansive interior hall and central atrium. The sweeping geometry of the roof creates ever-changing spatial and light effects throughout the day, transforming the act of arrival and departure into a memorable architectural experience. Strong visual connections between the city, the harbor, and the open sea are maintained at every level.

Public Plaza

At grade, the open plaza functions as an extension of Kaohsiung’s urban fabric — an articulated yet continuous public space situated at the intersection of pedestrian flows that link the city center to the water’s edge. The sculpted underside of the elevated terminal provides shelter from the subtropical sun and seasonal rains while at night becomes a canopy of dramatic illumination for public events and gatherings.

Urban Catalyst

The Kaohsiung Seaport Terminal operates as both transportation infrastructure and public urban catalyst, redefining the city’s relationship with its harbor and reinforcing Kaohsiung’s role as a major international maritime gateway.
