A visionary sports arena concept perched dramatically on the edge of a sandstone cliff in Qiddiya, Saudi Arabia, featuring a sweeping canopy roof, sculptural structural supports, and expansive public gathering spaces that merge architecture with the natural desert terrain.
Sited at the edge of a towering sandstone cliff within Qiddiya, Saudi Arabia’s emerging entertainment and sports mega-destination, the arena exploits its vertiginous terrain as a design driver rather than an obstacle. The building is cantilevered out over the rugged desert terrain below, its fluid, organic form appearing to grow from the rock itself, with sculptural white concrete supports rising from the cliff face to carry the soaring structure above the landscape. This integration of architecture and geology gives the 25,000-square-meter venue a spatial drama rooted in its specific site conditions.
Canopy & Interior
The arena’s sweeping canopy roof unfurls across the structure in a continuous, flowing gesture, sheltering the seating bowl while remaining partially open to frame panoramic views of the Qiddiya skyline and surrounding mountains. The roof’s lattice-like truss system balances structural performance with visual lightness, allowing natural light and desert breezes to filter into the interior. Inside, the arena bowl features curved tiers of seating that wrap around the central playing surface, with a large-format display screen integrated into the stands. The interior atmosphere is designed to feel both intimate and grand, drawing spectators into the action while connecting them to the expansive landscape beyond.
Public Realm
Beyond the arena itself, the design creates a rich public realm at the cliff’s edge. An elevated plaza extends beneath the canopy, offering a generous outdoor gathering space animated by visitors, landscaped gardens, and pedestrian promenades that lead to and from the surrounding Qiddiya development. The entrance concourse features dramatic curved overhangs and glazed facades that blur the boundary between interior and exterior. By day and by night, the arena transforms — bathed in golden desert light at sunset and glowing against the twilight sky after dark — establishing itself as a landmark destination and a symbol of Qiddiya’s aspirations for world-class architecture and sport.
