Changsha, China

Changsha, China 2008 Changsha Municipal Development Authority Large-scale indoor recreation and sports complex Competition Entry

A major recreational and entertainment anchor within the Changsha Eco-Tech City masterplan — integrating a large indoor ski slope with year-round sports and leisure programs within a crystalline architectural envelope that expresses the idea of a frozen landscape embedded in a contemporary urban environment.

Situated within the broader Changsha Eco-Tech City development along the Xiang River, Crystal World addresses the challenge of bringing winter sports culture to a subtropical climate. The project houses a full-scale indoor ski slope as its centerpiece, surrounded by year-round sports and leisure programs that establish the complex as a regional tourism destination and a catalyst for urban activity within the masterplan.

Program & Organization

The architecture is organized around the dramatic interior volume of the ski slope, which forms the central spatial and visual focus of the complex. Surrounding the slope are layered program zones including retail, dining, sports facilities, and public gathering spaces that activate the building throughout the year.

Envelope & Identity

A crystalline architectural envelope defines the building’s identity, expressing the idea of a frozen landscape embedded within a contemporary urban environment. The facade and roof geometry introduce natural light into the interior while reinforcing the landmark presence of the complex within the larger Eco-Tech City development.

Urban Catalyst

Crystal World operates as both a recreational facility and an urban catalyst, establishing a vibrant leisure destination that supports tourism, sports culture, and year-round public activity within the masterplan.
