Chor Residence

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil 2004 Family Chor 800 sqm Commissioned

A sculptural residential project in Rio de Janeiro's Leblon neighborhood, inspired by the powerful works of great Brazilian sculptors and architects, merging landscape and architecture into a work of timeless form.

Situated in Jardim Pernambuco, Leblon — one of Rio de Janeiro’s most prestigious neighborhoods — the Chor House occupies a 1,600 square meter site where the surrounding tropical landscape and the vitality of carioca life inform every aspect of the design. The architecture merges landscape features and natural elements with masonry, Corian, and other building materials, creating a vast open-air interior courtyard and garden set into the heart of the city while a sculptural roofscape covers and protects the private home beneath.

Program & Site

Situated in Jardim Pernambuco, Leblon — one of Rio de Janeiro’s most prestigious neighborhoods — the residence occupies a 1,600 sqm site with approximately 800 sqm of built area. The program is organized across three floors and a basement: the ground floor contains entry, entertainment areas, dining and living rooms, and spa facilities; the second floor houses six bedroom suites; and the third floor provides two additional guest suites with a shared living area. The basement doubles as a garage and soccer court.

Landscape & Interiority

The architecture consists of a vast open-air interior courtyard and gardens set into the very heart of the city of Rio de Janeiro. The architecture celebrates the inherent beauty and elegance of the Brazilian landscape and the unique and extraordinary vitality and ever-changing atmosphere of Rio. The buildings’ roof forms create a surreal and unexpected juxtaposition of landscape and architecture. The interiority of the project is made up of several unique sculptural spaces and volumes — stable rooms and areas that are at once fluid and dynamic in their spatiality. The architecture is, above all, an architecture of timelessness, an ode to Brazilian life, vitality, and beauty.
