A contemporary academic facility extending the University of Applied Arts in Vienna — introducing new studios, classrooms, and exhibition spaces that balance contemporary architectural expression with sensitivity to the historic urban fabric of Vienna's city center.
Founded in 1867 and located at the heart of Vienna’s Ringstrasse district, the University of Applied Arts has long operated within historic buildings that, while architecturally significant, constrain the spatial demands of contemporary art and design education. The expansion addresses this tension, providing purpose-built facilities for studio work, exhibition, and interdisciplinary exchange while reinforcing the institution’s role as a center for artistic experimentation.
Program & Interior
The project introduces new studios, classrooms, and exhibition spaces organized around a sequence of interconnected interior environments that support collaboration, teaching, and public cultural events. The architecture creates flexible working spaces for students and faculty while integrating areas for exhibitions, lectures, and interdisciplinary exchange.
Context & Expression
Responding to the dense urban fabric of Vienna’s historic center, the design balances contemporary architectural expression with sensitivity to the surrounding city context. Carefully articulated facades and interior spatial connections establish a dialogue between the new academic spaces and the existing university buildings.
Institutional Mission
The project positions the expansion as both an educational facility and a cultural platform, supporting the university’s mission to foster artistic research, experimentation, and public engagement.
