Sheik Khalifa Bridge

Saadiyat Island, UAE
Design Concept
Asymptote Architecture's concept proposal for the Abu Dhabi Bridge is a sophisticated 3D membrane surface drawing its formal inspiration from the spectacular falcons in the UAE region. Its modular tessellation incorporates elements from the local tradition of architectural pattern-making, including mosaics and ornate screens. It also contributes to the structural performance and enables natural ventilation. These influences, combined with state-of-the-art architectural technology, ultimately create a dynamic and refined design proposal.
Shell Surface
Embedded photovoltaics provide a sustainable response to the power demands of the integrated lighting and sensors, simultaneously creating ideal lighting conditions for drivers on the bridge below and a spectacular silhouette in the city. In addition, the structure's surface allows customizable animating light after sunset, an effect that brings the geometry to life.
